Castlefreke Woods Walking Trails
Castlefreke Woods offers a fascinating suite of interconnected woodland trails located approximately 10km southwest of Clonakilty, adjacent to Long Strand and Owenahincha Beach. Once part of the historic Freke Estate, these beautiful woods feature diverse habitats including wet woodlands, coastal areas, and old woodland with impressive specimen trees.
Walking Trails
- Lord Carbery's Cross Trail (1.3km, 40 mins, moderate)
- Strand Leg trail to Long Strand (200m, 5 mins)
- Castle Cross Trail (650m, 20 mins, easy)
- Lake Walk to Kilkeran Lake (1km, 20 mins, easy)
- River Walk biodiversity area (450m, 10 mins, easy)
- Castlefreke Warren Walk with ocean views (1.3km, 30 mins)
Historical & Natural Features
The woods contain reminders of the estate's grand past including impressive entrances, Lord Carbery's Cross (Ireland's highest memorial cross at 30 feet, erected in 1902), estate walls, and Rathbarry castle and church nearby. The location beside Long Strand provides spectacular Atlantic views. Interestingly, the Long Strand dune system was formed by a tsunami in 1743.
Free access year-round. Picnic tables in main car park. Coillte-managed forest. Perfect for families, walkers, and nature lovers.
